چکیده

Monte Carlo techniques are the primary method for modeling the behavior of light in biological tissue. They were first applied in this context to modeling the interaction of laser light with tissue in medical applications for the assessment of damage during clinical laser ablation (2). The term Monte Carlo (3) refers to the use of a stochastic simulation to model physical processes. It is well understood and widely deployed. However, since the tissue ablation literature assumes the existence of a tightly collimated laser beam, and the current application requires examination of individual photon paths, we wrote a custom version of the basic photon scattering and absorption model in the MATLAB development environment (MathWorks, Natick, MA).
